Essentials For Getting Started With NLP To Grow Your Coaching Practice

Getting started with NLP could give you a big head start in the race for business. But most folks a row of business people ready to get started with NLP and one is breaking out ahead of the othersdon’t really know the real power of NLP.

Some folks think they’ve got NLP because they’ve heard about ‘eye cues’ and what they mean.  Or a bit about how to ‘build rapport’ by doing what the other is doing, or mirroring.

Well, those are a part of Neuro-Linguistic Programming.  But they totally miss the mark as to the real value of embracing  NLP. It is far more than just a set of tools for accelerated behavioral change.

Getting Started With NLP From The Bottom Up

Every body of knowledge has a foundation. That foundation is the core vision, mission, and values.  These inform the way the tools and techniques are built and supposed to be utilized.

It’s unfortunate NLP became so well known for its trail of effective techniques. In a way, it  cheated those interested in the real value of NLP as a model designed to elicit excellence from less than excellent behaviors or limited ways of thinking.

image of a brain uploading new information again and again, generating more potential for creativityEvery individual’s brain creates a model or mental representation of how that person views the world.  And it’s constantly adding to or subtracting from that representation.

The more a person interfaces with the multiple areas of life, the more creative and strategic their brain can become in generating and interweaving those models.

In other words, the more exposure to differing ways of experiencing the world, the more likely the individual is to be a strategic thinker who makes good choices.

“…You’ve got to have multiple models — because if you just have one or two that you’re using, the nature of human psychology is such that you’ll torture reality so that it fits your models, or at least you’ll think it does…It’s like the old saying, “To the man with only a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.”  –

There are multiple models for mental health.  As a coach, you want to have multiple models for behavioral change and personal transformation.

Exposure To Multiple Mental Models
Keeps You Ahead Of The Crowd

Including various other bodies of knowledge can bring you a big payoff in return clients and more referrals. That’s because you’ll be able to help more people more effectively and efficiently.

In this way, you can enhance your client’s map of the world; expand it, loosen it up a bit, open upimage of a blueprint with pencil and ruler for coach to see architecture of client's inner landscape a few doors and windows that have been nailed shut.  This will enable them to have what they need to make the more wise and strategic decisions they’re requesting.

Of course you have to demonstrate to the unconscious mind that the new behavior, belief, strategy is in the best interest of the client as a whole person. Your clients want change.  But the current way they are viewing the world and themselves is the ultimate problem – and paradoxically –  the ultimate solution.

A Few Recommendations To Check Out

Of course, I’m going to recommend getting started with NLP as a great first step. But, here are just a few of the ‘mental models’ or building blocks, that can support you in helping your client expand their own model of the world, or personal map of reality.

      • NLP

      • Organizational Development
      • Human Resources Guidelines
      • Multiple Models For Spiritual Inquiry
      • The Architecture of Presence & Being Here Now
      • Paradox Management

Deciding to begin with NLP is a great first step to exploring mental models. This is because NLP gives you the tools to elicit your client’s mental model, the model that really counts.  And then shows you how to work within them.a woman with a hard hat and blueprint in hand she got from getting started with NLP and learning how to read other's model of the world

When you understand the architecture of your client’s inner landscape, it becomes pretty easy to help them get where they want to go.

After all, that is your promise, spoken or not.  So the more you know, the more quickly and effectively you can help your client reach their goal.

Political Polarization Got You? What To Do To Find Your Balance Once Again

Do you know when political polarization takes you over? Are you aware how it feels in your body?  Is it possible you’re trying to get rid of a frightening dilemma by choosing one side of thetwo people walking in opposite directions due to political polarization political spectrum as better and more correct than the other side?

If so, these tips based on NLP and spiritual inquiry will help you return to a calmer and clearer space.  This potentially explosive time for politics, and the form of government in general, creates a powerful opportunity.  You have the chance to dramatically expand your awareness, presence, and consciousness moment to moment.

Embrace this tumultuous time and catapult your view of things to a new and more expanded perspective.

What does this current circumstance of political polarization offer you besides angst, anger, and confusion?  It’s a great opportunity, if you wish it to be. Expand your desire to become more conscious into a daily, if not moment to moment, empowering practice.  Simply watching the news can create this circumstance for you.

The goal is three-fold:

      1. Being able to navigate the presence of such political turmoil with a new level of conscious awareness and calm.
      2. Allowing conscious awareness and calm to emerge from the perspective (viewpoint) that frees you to remain balanced.
      3. Embracing balance as the key that allows you to embrace and live the wisdom that being aware and present offer moment to moment.

Tip #1:

Our rush to polarization is natural. It happens in the blink of an eye.  It is an unconscious reaction.

two people gripped by political polarization fighting over whose in control of the steering wheelDon’t judge yourself.  In the midst of all the political polarization and rhetoric, you are automatically pulled to the position that matches your point of view. You want to honor your values. You want to take a stand FOR your values and AGAINST the opposing values.

This is the unconscious natural reaction to opposing points of view. One MUST be right and the other wrong.

Yet, conscious awareness demands you remain calm and present to what is – in this instance –  two opposing viewpoints.

Remember that balance is the key – if not outwardly, then inwardly.  To evoke it, simply do the following:

First, pay attention. Are you aware you’re getting unbalanced on the inside due to the apparent imbalance you’re viewing on the outside?

Tip #2:

The Larger Whole to which we ultimately belong, call it what you wish, demands balance.

This is unfortunately not negotiable. And, yes, it’s hard to accept that the strategy this larger Whole employs to restore balance is the continual arise and fall of opposing points of view. Continue reading

Understanding The Enneagram Guarantees You’ll Be A Better Coach

Understanding the Enneagram adds more power to whatever kind of coach you may be, or wish to be. It also opens the door to greater personal happiness and contentment.

Having the Enneagram as one of your of core tools is immensely helpful to long term success. You’ll be able to assess your client’s core issues very quickly. And that means generating more return clients and even more fabulous referrals.

The Problem With A Private Coaching Business

      • What it takes to keep the business up and running and financially successfulSports Coach giving a time out signal to pause and reevaluate what understanding the Enneagram can do for your career.
      • How much hard work it takes to keep a steady stream of clients pouring in

I’ve found there is an easier way to create your success, both professionally and financially.  I’m not saying you won’t have to engage in these marketing activities.  They are part and parcel of survival in today’s marketplace economy.

Is There A Relationship Between Love And Coaching?

a landscape of a poppy field during a brilliant sunset

courtesy of www.Pixabay.com – Post by Ragini Michaels

Do you think there is a relationship between love and coaching? Does your presence a contributing factor? It may seem strange to think about ‘love’ having a place in coaching. Yet, in my world, it is the fundamental ground for all success. Why would that be?

Well, I guess we first have to create a working definition for this very powerful word that brings up all kinds of responses and reactions.

So here’s how I’m going to define it for the purpose of finding its place in coaching. (And all other areas concerned with lessening the suffering and confusion we human beings can’t seem to get away from.)

Love: the release of all personal & professional judgement about who is in front of you, the way they are perceiving their reality, and how they are navigating their lives.

2 hands releasing a hoard of butterflies into the airSound simple? Well, most folks in the people helping professions would say this is a ‘no-brainer’.

Yet, we all find out, sooner or later, that it’s not so easy to actually do.

Why Love In Action Is Both Simple & Easy WHEN You Have The Skills You Need

Here’s where awareness, presence, consciousness, and the power of mindfulness enter the scene.

These capacities offer a bit of distance from what is in front of your eyes and ears and emotions. They allow you to take that needed ‘step back’ from your reactions and assessments (including your beautiful psychological, emotional, and energetic training).

That tiny step away from the situation frees you to find a new ground that allows you to take a new kind of action. That is action based on clarity about the client’s view of reality (both problem & solution).

One of the most helpful models for accomplishing this seemingly easy but actually very challenging task is NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming). NLP is well known for its trail of almost magical, fast change techniques.

BUT … I found its most amazing contribution to be the fundamental skill set for communication with the unconscious mind, which is the key for developing an uncanny level of trust, and the uncanny results that come with it.

Communication With The Unconscious Mind Is The Key

This NLP skill set offers the precise tools for demonstrating the relationship between love and coaching.

It’s what I call Love In Action – a deep respect for and acceptance of the client’s personal and very unique sense of reality.

an image of 2 cartoon men communicating with each other using two tin cans connected by a string.Respect and acceptance is what happens when you can suspend your judgments and assessments about what’s wrong and what needs to be fixed or corrected.

It’s easy to pay lip service to the fundamental coaching perspective: Your client is perfect as they are.

However, it requires skill to demonstrate this in your actual words and behavior.

Why is this important? So the client’s unconscious mind finds you worthy of its trust.

And the unconscious mind has to trust you in order to grant permission for the requested change to actually emerge.

I am a faithful proponent of including NLP into every coach’s repertoire. This model gave me the gift of running my private practice for over 4 decades by referrals only. I think that speaks for its efficacy and effectiveness.

Why Judgment Limits Awareness
Even When You Believe It’s Accurate

When judgement happens outside of your awareness, (even if it’s an accurate assessment), the judgment (whether positive or negative) still shows in your non-verbal and often verbal behaviors, like tonality, tempo, inflection, and volume. This can even impact how you unconsciously structure your sentences.

My point is thattwo hands couching a ball between them floating in the air that says RESPECT in capital letters if you’re unaware of your own judgments about what you’re perceiving in the other (even if you’re seeing a perfect match to your psychological training for dysfunction), you limit your ability to demonstrate Love In Action.

There is little that can replace the power of communicating respect and true acceptance of the other’s perception of reality. As human beings, we almost all feel more than a little starved for recognition, acceptance, and approval.

Viewed from this angle, the relationship between love and coaching starts to appear obvious.

So even though you have judgments about the way the other is perceiving things, the skill set I’m advocating allows you to consciously and purposefully move beyond them.

This frees you to demonstrate respect and acceptance in both your language and non-verbal communications. You will have developed a discerning eye for the innate challenges of the human condition, and how to perceive beyond their intrinsic limitations.

Love In Action Is Transformation In Action

I would go so far as to assert that demonstrating Love In Action as I’ve defined it here is the most healing and life changing gift you can give another.

It is a rare ability to truly communicate acceptance and respect for another’s perception of reality.

The idea is easy. The actualization of the idea into your behavior requires time and energy to develop.

cartoon image of an unhappy heart with bandages held in hands covered in words like friends, inviting, welcoming, loving, attentiveBut you do have this capacity. And I encourage anyone working with people in any context to take the time to at least explore this powerful skill set offered via NLP.

In so doing, you will amplify the power you bring to the communication table – both conscious and unconscious – whether for professional or personal outcomes.

Where You Can Learn This Skill

You will want this skill set in your communication tool bag. To learn more about how to get it, please go to www.InspiredNLP.com. Take a moment and check out the details for my NLP Coach Certification training granted to me through the original certifying body, The Society Of NLP.

I was honored to study NLP back in the late 1970’s with co-founders Richard Bandler & Grinder, and later on with Robert Dilts and Leslie Cameron Bandler.

Because of that, I can promise a bit of the original purity that always accompanies a great model before it becomes popular and mainstream, and some of what made it so great fades into the background.

Much love to you,

Ragini

How Many Shoes Can You Easily & Quickly Step Into?

Everyone knows people come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. The question is: “Do you have the flexibility to step inside their shoes and see the situation from their point of view?” I’m known to rant a bit about perceptual flexibility, and here’s the reason why.

After 30 + years of working with others, it became clear this skill was the key to truly helping others help themselves. When you can work from the others point of view, it makes everything you do with your client more efficient and ultimately, more effective and sustainable by them.

It takes a lot less time for you to meet your client where they live than it takes to convince your client to come to where you are.

Helping people shifts into an art form when you master the skill of helping your client discover on their own what they need to see or know or feel – without you telling them directly.

When you discover with your own eyes what you’ve been missing, it impacts much more than when you’re told about it by someone else. This approach invites learning at a much deeper level accompanied by a more rapid incorporation and integration. Continue reading
